Feel Good Gifts (Doodles Laser)

Owner: Ms. Marie Miller and Ms. Byrene Mongie interviewed by Bill Jen

Located in the West of Cape Town, Feel Good Gifts was founded about 11 years ago by Ms. Byrene Mongie with the goal of creating jobs and empowering women. In a nuts shell, they wanted their company to flourish so the employees can be the bread winner to support their families. Their target was to employ 20 people or more and step by step with the help of the laser their dreams are coming true.

They bought a laser machine from Gencotch about 7 years ago but at that time, it was a Universal laser. Five years ago they purchased a Mercury laser which they sold and bought a Spirit; then last year further 2 units (X25280W lasers) were purchased. Before they invested in laser cutters all their jobs were done manually. “It is a pleasure having the lasers as they increased our quality as well as productivity. Wedding decorated paper needs to have a very thin cutting line and the Spirit laser does the job like a Pro. The engraving speed is exceptional and when it comes to quality, precision and productivity, the conventional manual method was nothing in comparison.”
Their business mainly involves gifts, wedding items, corporate signs and household decorative items. The most common materials that they use are paper, boards and MDF. If the items are small and need to show details such as a stencil, paper boards will be used. If the product is a candle holder that needs to be sturdier or used outdoors then MDF will be applied. Laser cutters had opened the door to more possibilities and growth. Machines operate 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. They are looking for new avenues of growing their business by exporting their art range to Europe.

With GCC and Gencotech’s strong support, their machines are always operational and always there for their customers. They have heard a lot of complaints from people who have china-imported laser machines with poor quality and local support and this never existed in their shop. That means down time lasts not for weeks but months which will cripple their business. The machines are cleaned thoroughly every weekend as they are their main source of income. They are very happy with the GCC range of lasers because of their reliability and simple operation.
